The records in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg have been deposited with two different cantonial
archives, one is located in Diekirch and the other in Luxembourg. Following is a list showing
the cantons and their locations:

Under the rule of the French with the emphasis of Napoleon, a great change took place in
their record keeping. It was under that rule that the Civil registration of births, marriages
and deaths began to operate.
CIVIL REGISTRATON
History Starting date: 1796
Made in Duplo. One is kept in the municipality and the other is sent to the competent Tribunal.
Ten year index is prepared in which names connected with births, marriages and deaths are
arranged in alphabetical order with dates. these run from 1793 to the present time.
PARISH REGISTERS
There were in the 18th century, 166 parishes. they are either kept in the local parish, the
appropriate municipality or in Luxembourg or Diekirch.
NOTARIAL RECORDS
These records contain various matters to property, wills and marriage contracts, etc. The oldest
one goes back to the year1612. By a Grand Duchal decree, all documents older than 60 years must
be deposited in the Government Archives.

films mostly cover the years 1803 to 1890 there is an index for every ten years, they are
