Notes for Jacobsen TIELEMANS
An Englisman according to himself an old acquaintance and special friend of yours (Jacobsen Tielemans) that you, who were considered dead for a long time, are alive and well, making a living as a tailor in Jamaica, and that you are not eager to go to
New Netherland because you have heard that Teuntie Straetsman got married, this serves to notify you that she had been told several times that you, who had stayed behind on the island of Guadeloupe, had died, and that eventually, with the Hon. Loard
Gereral Petrus Stuyvensant's consent, she entered into matrimony again, with Gabriel Corbesij, soldier of the afore-mentined General. However she, who assumed you had died before her, showed you the way through death (which spares nobody), namely on
October 19, 1662. What she left behind, was of very little importance, but in addition to that, (the following persons): Margariet Meyringk, who is married for the second time, to Hendrick Martensen van Coppenhagen (= of Coppenhagen), and (who) we
hired out to Gerrit Cornelissen in Midwout, also called Vlackebos, where she is getting plump and fat, an indication that she is thriving better there than she did at home. And you can be assured that the people are fine and that they like your
daughter as much as their own children. Although we acted to the best of our abilities and will continue to do so on her behalf, we nonetheless could not refrain on this occasion from advising you, who are the father, that your daughter is alive, so
that, if you have something to make for her or send to her as a token of paternal affection, you can do so, or if you want her yourself since you are her closest relative (not that she is burden to us), you could come and get her or come to her, or
send a warrant with a proper procuration and a certain statement from your govenor or magistrates so that we know for certain whether you are alive and whether it is your wish and desire that the aforesaid Anna Tielemans be sent to her risen father,
both to your contentment and to the satisfaction of our consicience. Farewell. Done in Breuckelen in New Netherland, February 17, 1664.
On behalf and by order of our church meeting
signed Henricus Selijns, Minister of the Word of God.
