Notes for Anthony Janson WESTBROEK

ALIAS: Hendricks / Jansen / Westbrook / Westbrock How Anthonie Jansen also known as Jansz from Westbroek Holland became known as Anthonie Westbroek in America. From the Biography of Westbroek, Anthony Janson by Herman J. Westbroek (9 Mar 1955) Anthony Jansen, sometimes referred to as Anthony Jansen Westbroek, ancestor of the Westbrook family of Ulster County NY. came to what is now Albany, NY. by 1661; but the date of his birth is not known. He apparently took his name from Westbroek, in the province of Utrecht., sometimes called Westerbroek, in the Netherlands.

His wife Ursel or Urseltje Dicks, from Holstein came to New Amsterdan (New York) with two chldren, 2 and 10 years old, in the ship de Moesman, sailing May 1, 1658 (Holland Society Year Book, 1902, p. 6) Anthony Jansen kept an Inn in Beverwyck (Albany) and was court messenger for the Colony of Rensellaeryck (Albany) as shown by the following records: On this day, the 16th of August, 1661, appeared before me Dirxk Van Schelluyne, notary public, and before the hereinafter named witnesses, Hendrick Jochemsz, of the first part, and Anthony Janz, court messenger of the colony of Renselaerswyck, of the second part, who acknowledged the aforesaid Hendrick Jochemz that he had let, and he, Anthony Jansz, that he had hired of, him...the lessor's house, lot and garden, now occupied by the lessor, .. in the village of everwyck...for the term of two following years, beginning on the 1st day of October next, for the sum of twenty good beavers and two hundred guilders in good, strung seawan..each year." The Taven of Anthonis Jansz is referred to on June 24, 1652 (Van Rensselaer Bowier Ms.,p.833). in court record August 1, 1662, "Anthony Jansz, court messenger of the colony of Rensselaerswyck, husband and guardian of Orsselte Dircks, his wife," appeared before the notary public, Dirck van Schelluyne, and declared that he had constituted and appointed ... Jan Hendricxsz Bruyn, proposing to return to Holland by one of the ships lying ready to sail, his special attorney to demand collect and receive - Anthony Lorme, draper, at Rotterdam, certain clothing, goods and gold and silver ware, together with (two) assignments of monthly pay, one executed by Lieve Fredericxze van'Gordingh, her cousin ("neef", which may mean either cousin or nephew), and the other executed by Myndert Dircxsz, her brother, both having sailed for the East Indies, likewise a will of subscriber's wife's aforesaid brother Myndert Dircxsz, which is entrusted to said Anthony Lorme; said goods, gold and silver ware to receive and convert into money, the payment of the monthly wages due to demand and receive; acquittance for receipts to deliver; also to receive from the hands of notary Leendert van Seyl at Rotterdam aforesaid a copy of a certain will which said Lieven Fredricxsz van Gordingh made to the behoof of the subscriber's wife on the 3d of April 1652... and in pursuance there of to receive at the treasury of the East India house at Amsterdam whatever he has coming to him... The last reference to Anthony Jansz is dated October 13, 1664, when "Orsseltie Jans" petitioned for a lot in the Esopus valley (now Kingston, Ulster County, NY.) for a distillery (Dutch Court Records of Kingston, in Holland Society Year Book. 1897, p.125). She is called Jans from the patronymic of her husband, as was quite usual at that time. The next record of her is found in the Kingston Dutch Church baptismal Register when on December 22, 1678, "Orseltie Dirxs" was sole sponsor of the child
Marya, of Michiel de Moth, Annetie Westroek, baptized at Hurley (near Kingston) R.R. Hoes: Register of the Kingston Dutch Church, bapt. no. 166) The mother Annetie Westbroek, is also in some baptisms Annetie Antoni. In the baptism of her child Johannes de Mott, Oct. 8, 1682, her brother, "Johannes Wesbrouck" was a sponsor (KB no. 282). The date of her death is not Known.
