Notes for Joannes STEICHEN

SOURCE: Steichen family book 2nd edition by Richard Steichen Fairlawn OH 1990

Joannes Steychen citizen of first rank, landowner, Mayor, is married and living in his mother's house. After his mother's death, the estate will be divided into six or seven plowings (seasons) following 12 days to the crown, 8 wagons of hay, 5 horses, 4 cows. (from the census following the fires of 1656, sheet 59)

NOTE:

(1). Marriage in the house of the parents was the right of the 1st born.
(2). It is not known how many children were in Joannes family but it can be deduced that there was more that one since the mothers' estate was divided.
(3). There is mentoned in Ober-Rentgen, Duchy of Rodenamcher, of a Hubert Steychen.
(4). Joannes father and other siblings may have died in the war or plague.
(5). Joannes marriage may have been delayed until after the 30 year war (1618 to 1648). He was probably in his late 20's.
(6). His father was already married by 1611.
(7). The Steychens in Schifflange preceed the Steychens in Ober-Rentgen.
