House names is a custom that took place in Luxembourg before the year 1780, it was to designate individuals not by their family name, but by the traditional name of the house they were born / living in. Henry was the first Steichen in Bivange, He was married in the Schiltzen house in Bivange to Anne Schiltz (alias Hemmer) marriage certificate is verified by the notary Spyr of Luxembourg. Generation of that direct line have been living in that house, which carries that name today. The Steichen house in Bivange (an annex to the Schiltzen house). where Edward was born, was owned since 1879 by Jean & Marie (Kirch) Steichen who stayed without descendants.
