He was the brother of Josephine Steichen (married to John P. Neiers) who settled in Sturgis, SD. Her daughter, Veronica Neiers, married Leo Keffeler. The death certificate of Catherine Steichen, his name is listed as William. Willibrad or Willbroch, as some of his descendants pronounced his name, was said to be a miller, and married Christine Rach against the wishes of her family. LDS Microfilm #1163410 shows supplementary papers necessary upon his marriage to Christine. They gave his profession as cultivator or farmer. LDS Microfilm #1140421 shows his birth record, as well as those of 6 siblings, he being the oldest. One brother, born in 1838, was also named Willibrad.
