Mr. and Mrs. Philip Gilson celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary here Monday. At 9 o'clock a high mass was sung at the St. Rose of Lima church by Rev. Jos. A. Loeffler and the couple again renewed thier marriage vows. The bride wore a black satin dress and black hat and wore a corsage bouquet of sweet peas and fern. Lillian Gilson and Robert Steffen, grandchildren, were the couple only attendants. Lillian Gilson wore a long yellow dress trimmed with yellow lace, a head band of yellow, a head band of yellow maline, wore white shoes and carried a basket of roses, yellow snapdragons, daffodils and fern. Robet Steffen carried a yellow satin pillow upon which lay a daffodil with the ring. Many friends and relatives attended the high mass. A celebration was held for immediate relatives after the mass. Mr. and Mrs. Gilson are the parents of six children as follows: Mrs. Anna Duprel, Mike, John, Mrs Josephine Untereiner, Margaret and Mrs. Alice Steffen. Mrs. Anna Duprel was unable to attend. Philip Gilson highly respected resident of Fredonia and in former years a resident of Port Washington, died at his home at Fredonia at 5:25 on Tuesday afternoon. Death followed a short illness. Deceased attained an age of 79 years.
Mr. Gilson was born in Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg, on March 5, 1855. He came to this country on Nov 6, 1901, coming directly to Port Washington. He resided here for several years and then moved to West Bend. In 1911 he moved to Fredonia which has been his mome ever since. He was a foundryman by vocation, which occupation he followed up to a few years ago since which time he has led a retired life.
Deceased is survived by his wife, Catharine, two son, Michael and John who conduct the Gilson Bros. Co. plant at Fredonia, Mrs. Andrew Duprel of Sturgis, SD., Mrs A. A. Untereiner of Dimock, SD., Mrs. Lawrence Steffen and Miss Margaret Gilson of Fredonia.
Other survivors are: 1 sister in Arlon, Belgium, Europe; 18 grand children and 3 great grandchildren. The funeral will be held Friday morning, August 24. Services will be held at the St. Rose of Lima church at 9:30 o'clock and interment will be made in the parish cemetery.

Mrs Catherne Gilson 76 nee Catherine Steichen passed away at her home in Fredonia at 2:15 a.m. Friday, Sept 29, after an illness of many years. The deceased was born Feb 28, 1863 at Beringen, Luxembourg, and married to Philip Gilson on Mar. 23, 1882 at Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg. The couple with their family immigrated to this country in the fall of 1901. They settled in Port Washington. Since 1911 they resided at Fredonia where her husband and sons founded the present Gilson Bros. Co. In 1932 Mr. and Mrs. Gilson celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Mrs. Gilson was a faithfull member of the Christian Mothers Society, the Women's Catholic Order of Foresters and a lifelong member of the Society of Jesus, Mary and Joseph.
Mrs. Gilson will be missed among her friends and neighbors, as she was an ideal mother and of true Christian character, her husband passed away five years ago, Mrs Gilson was the mother of eight children two having preceded her in death. The surviving are Mrs. Anna Duprel, Sturgis, South Dakota, Michael and John of Fredonia, Mrs Josephine Untereiner, Dimock, South Dakota, Margaret at home, Mrs Alice Steffen of Fredonia. One brother Henry Steichen of Fort Worth, Texas, 18 grandchildren and ten great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services were held at 9:30 a.M. Monday at St. Rose of Lima church at Fredonia, burial being made in the church cemetery. Rev. O. Winninghoff, officiated. The pallbearers were the following: Jerome Gilson, John Untereiner, Philip and Norbert Steffen, Raymond Possely and Bernard Solms. The Christian Mothers society attended the funeral in a body.

The North Brick-Yard is under the management of Nicholas Wiltzius, who is doing a profitrable business. The clay in the vicinity of Port Washington is easy of access, while a excellent quality of sand used for the manufacture of brick lies in abundance in close proximity to the clay. With the enlarged facilities afforded by the harbor for shipping, the brick manufacturing interests of Port Washington bid fair to rank second to none in the State.
This enterprise was first started under the mangement of Theodore Gilson and John Maas in 1850. At the end of two years, Maas withdrew from the partnership, when C. Critzner took his place. Critzner was afterward succeded, first by Nicholas Martin in 1864, and then by John Tossault in 1866. Tossault remained in the firm until 1868, when Mr. Gilson bought out his interest, and started the business anew under the firm name of Gilson and Son. The estimated cost of building and machinery is $15,000.

Theodore Gilson, one of the oldest settlers of this place, died at the home of his son John last Sunday morning at 6 o'clock, aged 73 years. he was able to be around up to within two weeks of his death. The funeral occurred Tuesday morning at nine, the remains being interred in St. Mary's cemetery. A large number of people attended the funeral services, which were held at St. Mary's church.
Mr. Gilson was born at Colmar-Berg, Duchy of Luxemberg, Germany, and emigrated to America in 1848, settling in Milwaukee. In 1851 he removed to Port Washington and established the foundry which is now run under the firm name of Theo. Gilson & Son. he was the inventor of many of the best improvements in plows and other machinery, and the inventive genius thus displayed has been fostered and developed to an unusal degree in the junior member of the firm. John Gilson, inventor of the adjustable chair irons which are used through out the world as supports for revolving office chairs, and founder of the Gilson Manufacturing Company, died at his home in Port Washington, March 1919, when in his sixty-ninth year. he was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on the present site of the Pabst Theater, June 11 , 1850, his parents being Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Gilson, natives of Luxemburg and Germany, respectively. Following their emigration to the United States, they resided for a brief period in Milwaukee and thence moved to Port Washington, where Theodore Gilson established a Foundry and Machine shop in which John Gilson eventually became associated under the firm name of Theodore Gilson and Son, the senior Partner continuing at the head of the enterprise during the remainder of his active life. He made some of the early Threshing and horse-power Machines and improved the models of the Plows made at that time.
John Gilson received his educational training in the public schools of Port Washington but put asided his text-book at a comparatively early age in order to join his father in the Foundry business conducted as Theodore Gilson and Son. Later John Gilson invented the adjustabe office chair iron, first of its kind produced, and at once entered upon its manufacture, organizing the Gilson Manufacturing Company, in 1893, with H.W. Bolens and the Boerner brothers as stockholders. As the business continued to increase by leaps and bounds, he found it necessary to enlarge his plant from time to time, & eventually a new factory was erected on the west side. John Gilson continued at the head of the business of the Gilson Manufacturing Company as its president until illness caused his resignation about 1909, and in 1914 both he and his son, John E. Gilson, sold their interests in the enterprise. Two years later, in 1916, they organized the J.E. Gilson Company for the making of gray iron castings and garden tools, i
n which John Gilson, having recovered his health, was actively engaged to the time of his death, when his son and namesake became the sole owner of the business. John Gilson purchased and drove the first automobile, a Toledo Steamer, in Ozaukee county, & he and his son built several two-cylinder gasoline cars at their plant in Port Washington in 1905-06. Aside from his manufacturing interests, Mr. Gilson was identified with financial affairs as one of the organizers of the Port Washington State Bank.
In early manhood John Gilson was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Rappold and they became the parents of five children, as follows: Mary, born May 14, 1873 who is the wife of Charles Penkwitz, of Port Washington; John E., whose biography follows in this book; and Mrs Frances Drahos, who was born September 9, 1885 and is deceased. The mother of the above named passed away several years prior to the death of her husband.
Mr. Gilson was identified with civic affairs in Port Washington through out his long career and did much for the industrial development of the city. A public-spirted, enterprising and progressive citizen, he became a member of the volunteer fire department and made a most creditabe record as a member of the city council of Port Washington for a number of years. His political views were in accord with the principles and platform of the democratic party. Fraternally he was affiliated with the Masonic order, belonging to Ozaukee Lodge. NO. 17, F. and A. M. A fine musician, he played in both band and orchestra. He long enjoyed high standing in social as well as business and civic circles of his community, and his death was the occasion of deep and widespread regret.

Obituary: Died in the City of Port Washington, Wis., on Thursday, April 3rd, 1884, of comsumption. Mrs Katie Bohan, wife of M.G. Bohan, publisher of the Ozaukee County Advertiser, in the 26th year of her age.
Death has again visited our midst and with his inexorable hand carried off one of our brightest flowers. The soul of Mrs Katie Bohan has been released from its frail habiliment of clay and invested with the crown of immortality.
Katie Bohan nee Gilson was born in this city on the 28th day of October 1858 and her whole life has been passed within its precincts. On October 24th 1882 she was married to Mr. M.G. Bohan in the Catholic Church in this city.
Katie died as dies the Christian when the flushed check and sunken eye told too truly that she was a victim of consumption, that treacherous disease, which never permits a sufferer to doubt a restoration to health until the hour of dissolution is at hand, she was sustained by the strong faith of a fervent religiouist and fey thought that she would die, until her wasted form was laid upon the couch of death, and her spirit had departed.
The funeral occurred on Sunday afternoon, and was largely attended. The obsequies were performed according to the ritual of the Catholic Church, of which denomination the deceased was a life-long member.
The day was pleasant and all of her school-day friends and companions were present. Sorrow in its saddest mein reigned in the hearts of all, as they listened to the chanting of the last requiem o'er her tomb. Many a tear was brushed away when she was taken to the home of the dead NICKNAME: Katie
